Sojourner Truth

For the second annual Rite of Passage Program for teenage girls in the Seattle, Washington Area, Nurse Staffing Solutions had the honor of participating as a health and wellness coach. The highlight of the weekend was the privilege to support these young ladies on their journey to health and wellness. After having such a positive and successful experience, NSS is happy to offer intimate health and wellness community interactives for young girls who may have questions they are too embarrassed to ask. As I reflect on teaching these young women about autonomy, consent, and healthy organs, the experience invoked the spirit of Sojourner Truth. Today we honor her work, legacy, and sacrifice.

Sojourner Truth was an African-American abolitionist and women’s rights activist who lived in the 19th century. She was born into slavery in 1797 in New York State but escaped to freedom in 1826. After gaining her freedom, Sojourner Truth became a prominent advocate for the abolition of slavery and women’s rights.
She is best known for her powerful speeches. Her famous speech, “Ain’t I a Woman?” was delivered at the Ohio Women’s Rights Convention in 1851. In her speeches, she spoke passionately about the rights of African-Americans and women, highlighting their intersecting struggles.
Sojourner Truth’s activism played a significant role in the fight against slavery and the advancement of women’s rights during a time of profound social change in the United States. Her dedication and resilience have made her an iconic figure in American history.
Investing in the health and wellness of women and girls through community engagement and health education is a priority for Founder Chisula Chambers.
